Child care and development is a major social issue in this country. Did you know that every year at the national, state and local level, bills concerning child care, child welfare, education and child health and safety are proposed, discussed, and passed or vetoed? Legislation that becomes law each year often includes funding from the federal, state or county in which you reside. Since children cannot represent themselves, you as parents need to advocate on their behalf. Some countries provide child care for all families. The U.S. has never committed to the cost of educating children universally in the years prior to entrance into the school system. So it becomes extremely important to let local, state and national elected officials know what needs to be done to make life better for young children and help families support and educate their children. This section of our site is here to help you understand How the Legislative Process Works, how to contact the elected officials at the federal, state and local level, the appropriate way to address an issue and other resources available to you. Topics include History of Child Care in California How the Legislative Process Works Communicating with Elected Officials Organizations for Young Children
The Resource Library at YMCA CRS has publications and materials on current legislation and advocacy, including On The Capitol Doorstep and the Legislative Update. If you would like current information on a specific bill, please call the Library line at 619.521.3055, ext. 304 and a librarian will return your call during regular business hours.
